Tapping into Melbourne’s rich architectural history

Art Deco homes in Melbourne tell a vibrant story of style and glamour, dating all the way back to the Roaring 20s. From the beaches of St Kilda, to Melbourne’s sprawling northern suburbs, Art Deco homes are a key feature of local architectural design.

If you own an Art Deco home in Melbourne from any decade, there’s a chance that you want to retain all the elements that make it special. However, retaining architectural features shouldn’t mean having to sacrifice on space and style as your family grows with your home.

At Supa Group, we work with homeowners and families to extend and renovate Art Deco homes. Our design consultants will work with you to get to the bottom of what you want to keep, what you want to add, and what you want to change.

FAQs

What if my Art Deco home has a heritage overlay?

If your home was build between after World War II — the peak Art Deco era — chances are that your home will be under a heritage overlay. This means that, to preserve the architectural heritage of the area, only certain changes can be made to the home. All city council areas in Melbourne have different requirements for obeying heritage overlays.

Many post World War II homes around Melbourne built into the 1950’s may not present to the street as Art Deco but often the plaster cornices and light fittings give a nod to the Art Deco style.

If you think that your Art Deco home falls under a heritage overlay, get in touch with Supa Group. Our team can help you figure out just what you can and can’t do to your home. We will also work with you to design an extension that falls within council requirements, and still gives you the space you need to grow.

What are the phases of an Art Deco home extension?

Like all Supa Group projects, our Art Deco renovations follow the same three-step process:

  1. The Design Phase is where we work with you to design the new additions to your Art Deco home. We offer a Free Design Consultation to get you started.
  2. The Contract Preparation Phase is where we prepare all the necessary documents and permits between yourself, our business, and your local council.
  3. The Build Phase is where our contractors get to work building the best possible renovation solution to your home. Our quality work is guaranteed for 10 years.

If you have any questions about the process and how long it takes, contact Supa Group. Every renovation is different, and will require different timelines to complete.

Can I live in my home while the renovation takes place?

Depending on the scale of your renovation or extension, you and your family may be able to live in the home while it progresses. All you need is access to all the basic amenities for living at home — kitchens, bedrooms, and bathrooms. However, if these are affected by the build, you may need to vacate the property for the duration.
