California bungalows extensions to improve space and style

More common in the northern states, the California bungalow style of house design is becoming increasingly popular. First introduced to Melbourne in 1913 from Los Angeles, its rise in popularity is attributed to the favouring of American style over traditional British design.

If you own a California bungalow home in Melbourne, you may be looking for opportunities to add space and style. To do this without sacrificing the eclectic charm of your home, you should consult with a professional California bungalow renovation company.

At Supa Group, we work with families to redesign and reimagine California bungalows, allowing them to enjoy great space and comfort. Our design consultants will help you identify all of the existing elements that you want to change or retain.

Key features of California bungalow renovations

California bungalow homes in Melbourne display a range of comfortable architectural earmarks, while effectively catering for seasonal changes in temperature.

Local brick

To keep everyone cool in summer and warm in winter, many of Melbourne's California bungalows feature local red brick.

Low set

Unlike their Queensland cousins, Melbourne California bungalows usually sprawl across a single level, surrounded by manicured gardens.

Traditional elements

Inside, you can expect to find a range of stylistic choices unique to the bungalow, including ornate architraves and Flemish glass windows.

About Supa Group

Just like our home extensions and renovations, Supa Group has stood the test of time. We were founded in 1974 by Frank Way, laying a solid groundwork of commitment and service to his staff, subcontractors, and most importantly, his clients — families seeking to remain in the home they know and love.

Now owned and operated by Neil Gardiner, Supa Group’s original commitment has remained the same. Today, our clients are still offered the peace of mind that comes with hiring a builder who takes projects from conception to completion.

Our reputation as a multi-award-winning master builder is built upon a foundation of commitment to quality. We are proud to deliver best possible outcomes for our clients, and we want to do the same for you. Contact us for a free design consultation, and begin building towards the future.

Does my California bungalow have a heritage overlay?

California bungalows have been around for a while. If your home was built in the period following World War II, or at any time before, chances are that it has a heritage overlay. This means that, as a homeowner, you have a duty to protect the architectural heritage of your local area. Only certain changes can be made to homes with heritage overlays, and each of Melbourne’s city councils has different requirements.

If you are unsure whether your California bungalow home has a heritage overlay, contact Supa Group. As master builders, we have great experience in navigating local council requirements. We will assess your home and the heritage overlay, and work with you to design an extension that will give you the best of both worlds.

What are the phases of a California bungalow home extension process?

All Supa Group projects, including California bungalow renovations, follow the same process:

  1. The Design Phase follows our Free Design Consultation. This is where we evaluate your home and requirements, and work with you to design your extension.
  2. The Contract Preparation Phase allows us time to prepare the necessary documentation for the build. We also gain permits from the local council so we can get work underway.
  3. The Build Phase takes place over the next 6 to 12 months, where we complete your new extension project to exacting standards. The quality of our work is guaranteed for 6 years after this.

Every California bungalow extension is different, and will require different timelines to complete. Get in touch with Supa Group for a more specific outlook on how long your project will take.

Can I live in my home while work is underway?

You can, provided that you have access to everything you need to comfortably live at home — a kitchen, a bathroom, and bedrooms for the whole family. If these basic amenities are affected by the build, you may have to vacate while work is underway. Every extension project is different, so get in touch with Supa Group to find out more.
