Charming and distinctive heritage homes

Melbourne’s architectural landscape is studded with a variety of period style homes, and replica period homes. Each style has it’s own distinctive character, and features denoting the time in which they were built.

Many people own a period style home, and love the ornate stylings which make it unique. But sometimes, you really do need to upgrade the size of your living spaces.  Our team at Supa Group can help transform your period home so it retains its historical charm. Find out how we can update the internal rooms so you can experience the spaciousness and light of a more contemporary floorplan.

Key features of a period home

Melburnians have a long-standing love affair with heritage architecture. The city's landscape is studded with different cultural and historical influences from throughout the ages.

Decorative cornices and architraves

Your period home may have beautiful ceiling roses, ornate skirting boards, or architraves from the pre-World War II era.

Terracotta roof tiles and embellishments

If you look across the city, you can identify some period style homes by their steeply pitched roofs, comprising terracotta tiles and ridge cappings, finials, dragons, and gargoyles.

Unique porches and verandahs

Depending on when your home was built, it may feature spiral columns, boarded window shutters and balconettes, or L-shaped verandahs with timber embellishments and fretwork.

About Supa Group

Just like our home extensions and renovations, Supa Group has stood the test of time. We were founded in 1974 by Frank Way, laying a solid groundwork of commitment and service to his staff, subcontractors, and most importantly, his clients — families seeking to remain in the home they know and love.

Now owned and operated by Neil Gardiner, Supa Group’s original commitment has remained the same. Today, our clients are still offered the peace of mind that comes with hiring a builder who takes projects from conception to completion.

Our reputation as a multi-award-winning master builder is built upon a foundation of commitment to quality. We are proud to deliver best possible outcomes for our clients, and we want to do the same for you. Contact us for a free design consultation, and begin building towards the future.

What happens if my period home has a heritage overlay?

If you think your home was built prior to WWII, then it is quite possible it has a heritage overlay. And, in some cases, even if it was built after WWII, there’s a possibility it will still be protected by your local council.

Every Melbourne council has different rules and regulations pertaining to heritage protection, but many are far less strict than they have been in the past. In most cases, you will just need to ensure your home’s facade remains untouched. This allows you plenty of scope to upgrade the internal living spaces and backyard.

If you’re unsure whether your home is protected, get in touch with our friendly team at Supa Group. We can help you work with your council’s heritage overlay laws to achieve a more modern home with plenty of space and light for your growing needs.

What are the different stages in a period home extension?

Supa Group follows the same process for all extensions and renovations.

  1. The Design Phase — our design team will work closely with you to ensure your home extension plan reflects your lifestyle.
  2. The Contract Preparation Phase — we’ll draw up all the necessary paperwork, and apply for any relevant council permits.
  3. The Build Phase — we’ll start constructing your designs and upgrading your home so you can experience more space, light, and style.

Can I still live in my period home while the renovations are happening?

In some cases, yes. For example, if you’ll still be able to access a bathroom, kitchen, and bedroom while we carry out building works, then you can stay in the home. But, if you can’t use any of these spaces, then you’ll need to find alternate living arrangements until those facilities become available.

How much will it cost to update or upgrade my period home?

The cost of a period home extension or renovation depends entirely on the scope of the project. When you meet with our design consultants, they’ll create a detailed quote and schedule for your renovation, so you’ll be aware of the costs every step of the way.
