Nillumbik Council Insights

Self proclaimed as the “Green Wedge Shire”, Nillumbik Council can rightly claim to be the lungs of Melbourne with its forested areas out through Hurstbridge, St Andrews and Strathewen.

Supa Group service the suburbs of Research, Eltham and Diamond Creek in the Nillumbik Shire.

The naming of Diamond Creek is puzzling as I have no knowledge of Diamond’s being mined in the area, although up until 1915 there was a gold mine.

The heritage centre at Ellis Cottage is a favourite spot to visit on a Sunday afternoon and contains many objects from the early days of farming in the district. This collection includes a Way Milk Can used in dairy’s. Frank Way was the founder of Supa Group and the Way Family had a business producing milk and cream cans and later refrigerated milk vats for the dairy industry.

Eltham, which is at the junction of the Diamond Creek and the Yarra River is renowned for its tree canopy which gives it a unique feel distinct from other Melbourne suburbs. The artist’s colony at Monsalvat is a great spot for a family picnic and the interesting buildings with their emphasis on mud brick is a great reflection on the suburb of Eltham. Eltham is well known for the mud brick dwellings built there.

Years back I visited the garden of the well-known garden designer Gordon Ford whose distinctive natural style gardens incorporating hard landscaping is easily recognizable around the eastern and northern suburbs of Melbourne. Gordon, a returned soldier from WW2 built the bricks for his home on site using clay excavated in situ. There was also a fabulous natural style pool and the overall feeling was that of a restful retreat.

Eltham is an old suburb, and so there are some examples of Victorian and Edwardian architecture that remain. However many of the homes were built in the 1960’s and 1970’s and have that distinctive styling that blends well into the bush.

Supa Group love working in Eltham and Diamond Creek and have had many successful projects over the years in these suburbs.

Frequently asked questions

Are there any Nillumbik planning permit fees?

The fee for your planning permit depends on the scale and scope of your renovation project, the overall budget, and the council inspections required. To get a quote for your fee, you’ll need to supply the building team on the council with planning and costing details. Alternatively, we can liaise with the city council and will include the price of your fee in our fixed quotation to save you the hassle.

What is Nillumbik City Council’s planning permit process?

Our professionals are very familiar with all planning permit procedures and requirements, so we will ensure that all documentation gets completed thoroughly and proficiently. Applying for a planning permit is an involved process which is why most people enlist the support of a fully registered builder or residential construction company.

If you have a heritage-listed property or a prior subdivision on the land or lot size, then it will mean that your application is more complex. However, we are experienced in heritage-listed projects and know the restrictions and procedures for these types of extensions well.

With our expertise and reliability, we can create great results under council restrictions and ensure the whole process is stress-free for you.

Do I need a planning permit for my Nillumbik home extension?

A range of factors determines whether you need a planning permit from the Nillumbik City Council. However, you must apply for a building permit through a registered building surveyor if you want to build an extension or do other work on your house. The Nillumbik Planning Scheme outlines all the guidelines and policies that inform council decisions about land use in the area.

Our team will be able to answer any queries you may have regarding this process and seek all necessary information on your behalf. So contact us today to plan your ideal home and book a free consultation.

How does Supa Group ensure we get the correct building permits?

Supa Group has been creating beautiful, quality homes throughout Melbourne for over 45 years. We have built strong working relationships with local contractors and councils. We are, consequently, also very knowledgeable about all of Nillumbik City Council’s codes, processes and planning procedures.

Before our Nillumbik designers and extension builders commence your renovation project, we’ll collaborate with the council to get all appropriate permits and approvals to complete the project on time. So whether you’re extending your ground floor or taking on a kitchen and dining area renovation, we’ve covered it so you can enjoy your new lifestyle sooner.
