Renovating Art Deco Houses Melbourne

The Supa Group story
Hear from our team >

Art Deco homes in Melbourne tell a vibrant story of style and glamour, dating all the way back to the Roaring 20s. From the beaches of St Kilda East, to Melbourne’s sprawling northern suburbs, Art Deco homes are a key feature of local architectural design.

If you own an Art Deco home in Melbourne from any decade, there’s a chance that you want to retain all the elements that make it special. However, retaining architectural features and interior design factors shouldn’t mean having to sacrifice on space and style as your family grows.

At Supa Group, we work with homeowners and families to extend and renovate Art Deco homes. Our design consultants will work with you to get to the bottom of what you want to keep, what you want to add, and what you want to change.

Key features of Art Deco buildings

Art Deco homes in Melbourne balance the rich glamour of the 20s with a range of bold architectural choices. In fact, you can find Art Deco-inspired construction all over the city, from the bustling Swanston Street, to the outer suburbs.

It’s not just traditional buildings that take inspiration from the Roaring 20s. There’s been a resurgence in Art Deco style in new listings, present in everything from apartments to homes with four bedrooms.

Art Deco heritage overlays

If your home was built after World War II — the peak Art Deco era — chances are that your house will be under a heritage overlay. This means that, to preserve the architectural heritage of the area, only certain changes can be made to the home. All city council areas in Melbourne have different requirements for obeying heritage overlays.

If you think that your Art Deco home falls under a heritage overlay, get in touch with Supa Group. Our team can help you figure out just what you can and can’t do to your home. We will also work with you to design an extension that falls within council requirements, and still gives you the space you need to grow.

FAQs

What are the phases of an Art Deco home extension?

Like all Supa Group projects, our Art Deco renovations follow the same four-step process:

The Consultation Phase is where we meet with you to understand what you require from a brand new Art Deco home redesign.

The Concept Design Phase is where we work with you to design the new additions to your Art Deco home.

The Contract Preparation Phase is where we prepare all the necessary documents and get started on building your home.

Finally, you get to enjoy your brand new renovated Art Deco home!

If you have any questions about the process and how long it takes, contact Supa Group. Every renovation is different, and will require different timelines to complete.

Can I live in my home while the renovation takes place?

Depending on the scale of your renovation or extension, you and your family may be able to live in the home while it progresses. All you need is access to all the basic amenities for living at home — kitchens, bedrooms, and bathrooms. However, if these are affected by the build, you may need to vacate the property for the duration.

How long will my Art Deco renovation take?

That all depends on the scope and scale of the project. Usually, our renovation and extensions can take between 6 and 12 months. You’ll get a more accurate estimate of a timeline when we meet for a Free Design Consultation.
