With two young teenagers, this art deco maisonette home was in need of more space. The obvious solution was an upper floor extension allowing the clients to retain their beautiful landscaped garden while providing much needed space for their growing family.
Inspiration for this upper floor extension came from a ski trip to New Zealand where the clients stayed in a lodge that boasted an ultra-modern façade. What resulted was a visually striking fusion of modern and classical.
Brand new upper floor with bedrooms, bathrooms, living, and storage.
The new second storey with its Western red Cedar cladding, Colourbond roof, and unique extruded casement window all stained in dark charcoal nestled proudly on the maisonette. Existing and new were undeniably distinct from each other yet connected by simple features like the charcoal stained fascia and the unique built up chimney in detailed metal cladding.
To make the upper floor extension more cost effective, Hardies Scyon Axon cladding was used to the sides and rear of the second storey extension.
The upper floor with its slick, dark hued floorboards featured two spacious bedrooms for the children with a main bathroom, powder room, open rumpus and a store room. The maisonette was beautifully and respectfully renovated throughout with only an existing study making way for the staircase minimising the impact on original floor plan.
New second storey extension adds space and style to existing elements.
Children and parents benefit from a spearate sanctuary upstairs away from the rest of the home.
Striking composition of modern elements and rich traditional highlights.
