What is mid-century modern architecture? The name can confuse: are these homes supposed to reflect the last century or the modern one? In a way, both.
Mid-century design arose in the middle of the 20th century, gaining popularity from the 30s to the 60s, and aimed for a futuristic architectural style that reflected that generation’s growing hope for a progressive future. Frank Lloyd Wright and the avant-garde artists of the Bauhaus movement largely influenced the mid-century modern style. When they were built, many dismissed the original mid-century house style as a fad — but they’ve well and truly stood the test of time.
In the future-focused spirit of the style, Supa Group can help you renovate and extend your Melbourne mid-century homes with a more contemporary layout. Whether extending your existing living room or renovating your bedrooms, we improve functionality while preserving the aesthetics of the original structure. Why don’t we begin with a Free Design Consultation?
Melbourne’s mid-century homes are renowned for their utterly unique designs. Even without a full grasp of the elements of the mid-century style, you’ll often be able to identify these stunners on sight.
Many mid-century modern homes have been designed to take advantage of their specific location and the surrounding landscape.
Windows are often emphasised in mid-century modern designs, blurring the lines between interior and exterior for a more harmonious space.
The original mid-century modern designs took advantage of breakthroughs in technology and engineering to create bold, new structural forms.
Minimalism was championed by mid-century modern designers, who found beauty in simplicity and directness.

The process begins with a Free Design Consultation, where our team will work with you to discover what's possible.
Heritage overlay schemes were introduced to protect architecturally significant buildings. If your home is a particularly fine example of the Melbourne mid-century modern style, it may be listed on a heritage overlay registry. This means there are limitations on the renovations and extensions you can request.
Thankfully, our expert team knows how to navigate council regulations no matter how strict. We can apply for all the permits needed and ensure that any renovations we do reflect and respect your property’s mid-century origins.
Have a look at our recent projects to get a feel for the type of transformation you can expect in your own home. Get ideas, be inspired, and then we’ll create your perfect home.
At Supa Group, we have a process for all extensions and renovations that covers the job from beginning to end.
We endeavour to allow families to reside in their homes during renovations. So long as amenities are still accessible — e.g. you can still use the bathroom and bedrooms — it should be possible. If you do need to move out during renovations, we'll organise plans to suit your needs and provide plenty of notice.
That all depends on the type of work you'd like us to do. The first step in the process, a consultation with our designers, is totally free. From there, we can supply you with a quote. We work hard to deliver quality work at the lowest possible price.
All our extensions involve extensive design and planning to make sure you get your dream home. Learn about our process in detail.
