Although this family loved their Coburg home and eagerly anticipated the annual visit of parents from the UK, the home lacked the space for them all to live comfortably under one roof for lengthy periods of time.
Ground floor extension for multigenerational living – bedroom, bathroom, living and wet bar.
With a growing trend towards multi-generational living, house extensions are becoming more popular. An extension affords families the space and versatility for shared accommodation and can be customized to suit everyone’s needs.
In this case the brief was to extend the house, create separate sleeping and living quarters for the grandparents, whilst still providing a floorplan that was conducive to a comfortable lifestyle without fear of losing privacy.
The old undercover entertaining area made way for the‘Grandparents Wing’ which comprised of a private living area, wet bar with a meals area and access to the spacious bedroom with bespoke BIR and luxe ensuite.
The extensions distinctive design was not only creative but smart with both the living area and the ‘grandparents wing’ having independent access via double glazed stacking doors to the charming rear garden. The design also afforded views of the deep garden through the pergola.
Minor modification was made to the existing home implementing an attic space with a retractable ladder; a trending storage solution.
Building during Covid restrictions posed major challenges. State regulations, lockdowns and strict on-site protocols seriously affected the build timeline.
Covidrestrictions aside, no project is without its obstacles and in this instance the new rear extension butted against the existing garage. Finding a solution to the two rooflines in order to minimise water retention around the house was difficult and securing the timber pergola to have it sitting above the Colorbond steel roof required some investigation in finding the right product.
The clients are avid gardeners and preserving plants and especially an olive treewas challenging during site works.
As a Design and Build company, it is imperative that the transition from Concept design; building permit to construction run smoothly ensuing that the project meets and exceeds client’s expectations without build delays or increased costs. Consequently, and despite Covid restrictions the project was skilfully bought to completion from concept in under 12 months.
All members of the family, including a pending new arrival were delighted with the end result. A home that was not only beautiful and functional but provided them all with the space to live harmoniously.
