The Spanish Mission home gets its name from the Spanish missionaries sent to evangelise in North America during the late 18th century. They adapted their Mediterranean style to suit their new climate and materials available, and, over the centuries, a distinctive new architectural form took shape.
Australia’s Spanish Mission-style houses are a far more modern preference. A renewed interest in their design sprung up in the early 20th century. The revival was spurred by interest in Hollywood movie stars, who had taken to living in luxurious Mission mansions. Today, you’ll find stunning examples of Spanish Mission-style homes dotted around Melbourne’s suburbs like Kew, Balwyn and Ivanhoe.
Supa Group’s team has had the pleasure of designing stylish renovations and extensions for Melbourne’s Spanish Mission homes. Each renovated home is a choice opportunity to marry the sun-soaked charm of the Spanish-American style with Australian modern design.
Australia's Spanish Mission-inspired homes quickly catch your eye, with distinctive features such as:
You can expect to see arched colonnades and arched gates, windows, and doors. Arched features are found throughout the exterior and interior walls of the family home.
Derived from the mud brick style the missionaries used, Spanish Mission-style abodes are made of brick and rendered with stucco.
Beautiful terracotta tiles are the norm for roofing on a Spanish Mission-style house.
These homes are often painted distinctively; white, pink, cream and baby blue are all popular choices. And that’s not even mentioning the stained glass windows many of these homes boast.
Arched gables, doors and windows
Terracotta roof tiles
Stucco finish, most often white
Ornate interior wood detailing and custom joinery
Open floor plan with flowing dining area living spaces
Fantastic mosaic-tiled bathrooms
Sun-facing master bedroom
The first step is a Free Design Consultation, with absolutely no obligations attached.
Some houses are protected by a heritage overlay, which are council regulations that dictate what renovations can and cannot be undertaken on buildings of architectural or historical significance. It is vital to check whether your home has a heritage overlay before even embarking on the design phase.
At Supa Group, we can check with the relevant council authorities and ensure that work on your Spanish Mission home is legal. We can also apply for any necessary planning permits, and protect your home's important aesthetic and historical features.
Have a look at our recent projects to get a feel for the type of transformation you can expect in your own home. Get ideas, be inspired, and then we’ll create your perfect home.
We have a tried and tested system for home renovations and extensions. This is true for Spanish Mission homes and all other architectural styles that we work with.
Often, residents can remain in their homes during the renovation process. The prerequisite is that the renovations won't prevent you from accessing household amenities, like the bathroom, toilet, and bedrooms.
If you can't use the amenities, you might need to find some temporary accommodation. If that happens, it won't take you by surprise; we will discuss this well in advance and will find the best way to work around your needs.
The costs of working on your home will depend on various factors. We will supply you with a detailed quote before work commences so you can be sure of what it will cost you. We ensure that all of our services are as affordable as possible without compromising quality.
All our extensions involve extensive design and planning to make sure you get your dream home. Learn about our process in detail.
