Greater Dandenong Council Insights

The Greater Dandenong Council includes the suburbs of Bangholme, Dandenong, Dandenong North, Dandenong South, Keysborough, Lyndhurst, Noble Park, Noble Park North, Springvale and Springvale South.

Dandenong is a working class town and had close roots to agriculture. Indeed it had been known as a market town and the establishment of the Dandenong Market in 1866 cemented it’s role with farming communities right through to Gippsland. In reality it was still a country town up until the 1950’s.

Dandenong, and the surrounding suburbs of Noble Park and Springvale remain proudly working class and the post WW2 influx of European Migrants cemented this notion. At the same time heavy industry moved into the area including car manufacture and food processing.

Dandenong is a hub for transport and is well serviced by roadways and trainlines.

Over the past few decades Supa Group have extended houses within the boundaries of the City of Greater Dandenong and continues to service this area.

Fun Fact: There is no tram service to Dandenong or within Dandong and the surrounding suburbs. However Melbourne’s E Class trams are built at the Comeng Factory in Dandenong. Comeng is an abbreviation of Commonwealth Engineering and they produced many of Melbourne’s suburban trains currently in use. Trains produced there are known as MTM sets – Motor Trailer Motor which are ubiquitous on Melbourne’s suburban rail system.

Frequently asked questions

How does Supa Group ensure I get the correct building permits?

Our boutique building company has created stunning home extensions across Melbourne for over 45 years. Therefore it's not surprising that in this time, we have developed a proficient communication process and built excellent relationships with local councils and contractors over this time. For example, we are very knowledgeable about all the building permit procedure codes and methods across the City of Greater Dandenong.

Before our Dandenong extension builders begin your home extensions, we’ll work with the local council to finalise all proper permits and approvals and enable timely project completion. So whether you are looking to embark on a ground floor extension, a family bathroom renovation or a complete home renovation, you can rely on our professional services to create the unique, quality home you deserve.

How much are the Greater Dandenong City Council building permit fees?

The amount our clients will have to pay for building permits is dependent on the overall cost of the home renovation. The council have a standard Building Application Fee of $123.70 with an additional levy of 1.28 cents per $1000 of the cost of construction work over $10,000, also payable. Any fees payable will be included in your fixed price contract.

Am I required to get a planning permit for my Dandenong home extension?

Depending on your planned home improvement, you may require a planning permit for your new home extension or renovation. The City of Greater Dandenong (Vic) offers non-binding advice on whether you will need a planning permit or not. Our design consultants will make the necessary enquiries to understand if a planning permit with the Dandenong Council is required or not. If consent from the Council is required that will need to be formalised before the private building surveyor can issue the building permit.

You can go to the local council planning permits for more details on this process. At Supa Group, our experienced professionals remove the stress from the logistics of this application by organising everything for you. We'll manage the proposed design, planning report, shadow diagrams and other relevant documentation for your planning permit application and submit it to the council on your behalf.

What does the City of Greater Dandenong City Council require for building permits?

Council will only need to be advised of your intention to extend your home if there are overlays or other triggers (like lot size, set-backs or site coverage) that mean planning consent is required from the Greater Dandenong council.

Council will consider the documentation and make a decision. Usually, they will advise neighbours of the planning application and invite feedback on the proposal.

Once this consent is received the building surveyor will be advised and the building permit can be issued.
