Gorgeous house extension Reservoir

A dignified Supa Group transformation for this Reservoir home

From time to time, Supa Group come across a special project. Such was the case with this beautiful art deco  home in Reservoir. There’s a saying that goes sometimes we choose a house, and sometimes a house chooses you. For the young family who live here, it was certainly the latter. They were contacted by the real estate agent directly and purchased this property privately. The current owners are only the third family to live in the home since it was built in 1938, and the previous owners wanted the home to pass onto a custodian, someone who would respect the house and maintain its classic features.

A little bit of history…

The house was built by David Francis Drought, who purchased a vacant block of land. Two other homes in the immediate vicinity have many of the same features, unfortunately one of these homes is the subject of a development application for six townhouses, so the special features contained in that home look like they will be lost. We are glad that the owners of this property were keen to preserve a beautiful part of Melbourne’s architectural history.

We love creating home extensions in Melbourne

The Supa Group team takes great pleasure in being tasked with extensions and renovations on older homes. We simply adore working in harmony with existing features to retain the charm and integrity of these beautiful buildings, while delivering space and light to enhance liveability.

When we saw this family home in Reservoir we were excited to get started and work with the family to deliver a stunning home extension.

Reservoir is home to a number of architectural styles, including Californian bungalows, art deco and austerity-style homes. The owners were keen to retain and enhance the original features as much as possible. So let’s take a look at what we did for this home extension in Reservoir!

Getting started: home extensions Melbourne

Melbourne home extensions

The existing home was a three bedroom brick veneer with dark floorboards throughout. There was a lot to work with, and we were keen to get the input of the owners who had ideas for the features and how to retain the home’s integrity.

A real stand out feature of this home is the plaster cornice throughout. It is unique and really draws the eye. Plus, there is a spectacular recessed ceiling dome on the lounge room which  is a real show-stopper.

Extra budget was allocated by the client to install plaster cornice and art deco molded rosettes that would do the home justice.

A section of the second storey extension was set back to accommodate the beautiful recessed art deco ceiling dome on the ground floor. We have many years of experience extending period homes, minimising the impact on the original structure and maintains the integrity of the building.

  • Supa Group developed a concept to build a second storey extension on the home, adding two bedrooms, a music room, a bathroom and a separate living area.
  • Although one of the bedrooms downstairs was sacrificed for the staircase; a larger bedroom with robes was created providing better flow and functionality to the ground floor
  • The client was careful to match the period features of the house for both the internal and external finishes.

Special little touches to make this home extension shine

As is common for art deco houses in this era, there were tapestry bricks around the windows, and this was repeated on the windows on the upper storey to match the style.

Suit the style: The extension has cornicing and ceiling panels that suit the style of the house, so that the extension blends seamlessly with the original architecture.

Salvage savvy: The clients rescued some light fittings from a house that was being demolished close by and they have been used in the extension to great effect.

A job well done and another happy client for Supa Group home extension builders

Our supervisor on the job, Braidon Marshall, described this project as ‘one of his favourites,’ and we can see why. It was a true collaboration between Supa Group and the client. It has great street appeal and the extension looks like it was part of the original house. A job well done.
