The original modernist: this Art Deco house in Pascoe Vale South has been beautifully extended and renovated.
With a distinctive set back façade and stepped chimney, softness comes to this clinker brick home from the curved front portico, and the natural fence of rose bushes at the front.
Originally presented as a three bedroom; one bathroom home, the existing floorplan wasn't conducive to the lifestyle needs for this family of four.
With a true appreciation of their home’s architectural features including hardwood floors, high ceilings and beautiful plasterwork, a knock down rebuild was never entertained. The aim was to preserve the homes classic attributes which they loved, but with a practical consideration of space requirements.
After detailed discussions with Supa Group, the proposal was a smart ground floor extension; providing a clean and light filled floorplan that aligned with their lifestyle.
Contemporary ground floor extension with some modification and renovation to ground floor
The project started with a partial demolition, removing an old sunroom, two small bedrooms and the external laundry and WC.
Setting the tone, the front sitting room with its original curved fireplace etched in wave motifs and the tiered brass and crystal chandelier suspended from the ceiling rosette, was restored to its former glory.
The adjoining dining room was now a functional home office with views to the rose garden, and the old kitchen was transformed into a sleek new laundry with wall to ceiling storage and a separate Linen cupboard.
Part of the new extension included a spacious master bedroom with WIR and ensuite; elegantly decked with speckled terrazzo and crisp white porcelain tiles.
Furnished with ceiling rosettes and vintage pendants; touches of Art Deco resonates subtly in the new bedrooms retaining the original homes charm.
Giving insight into the home, the long hallway adorned with chevron cornices balloons at the rear to a bright and airy contemporary kitchen, dining and living area; its high raked ceiling with square set cornices giving the home a sense of grandeur.
Visually distinctive, the monochrome open floor plan is a study in functional yet comfortable relaxed spaces with a great connection to the outdoor undercover timber decked alfresco.
Intentionally breaking from the original clinker brick, the new addition was clad in James Hardie Scyon Axon in a dark charcoal hue with white window trims continuing the monochrome theme.
Completed with new white plantation shutters and charcoal accents to its façade, this house, already some 80 years old is set for another 80 and blends into the streetscape beautifully.
