It was on her daily walk to the Ivanhoe train station that the client came upon a Supa Group project where a second story extension was being built. With interest piqued observing how steadily works progressed, the client, impressed with the end result reached out to find out how we might be able to help her.
Upper floor extension with three bedrooms, bath and retreat for kids and new butler’s pantry to kitchen.
Our clients loved their Art Deco family home and community but just needed more space for their growing family.
Already fully renovated with an inground pool in the backyard, going up was the only solution. The first-floor addition would allow the family to maximise the homes floor plan and provide design flexibility.
In keeping with the homes period character, a beautiful and sympathetic second story extension was designed. Offering each of the young children their own spacious bedroom with BIR, a main bathroom with separate toilet, linen cupboard and a breakout ‘kids only’ play area, the children were thrilled and Mum was delighted with the extra storage.
Besides the new first floor, the brief also called for some modification to the ground floor to add a Butler’s pantry and make room for the staircase. The design had to make sense and importantly be aesthetically pleasing.
When designing a second storey extension the location of the staircase is important. It not only determines the design and layout of the upstairs floorplan but its accessibility needs to meet the family’s activities and lifestyle.
The solution; a smart design that achieved two different goals with only one room being compromised. The new timber staircase and spacious butler’s pantry which backed onto the kitchen was created with minimal disruption to the ground floorplan preserving the living room with its geometric Art Deco windows.
Freshly painted in a soft pastel hue and sporting anew Colorbond steel roof, this beautiful house is now the perfect home for this family.
