Maroondah Council is an outer eastern local government area containing the suburbs of Bayswater North, Croydon (in all it’s iterations), Heathmont, Kilsyth, Kilsyth South, Park Orchards Ringwood, Ringwood East, Ringwood North, Vermont, Warranwood and Wonga Park.
I’ll declare a special interest in Ringwood, another one of those suburbs that in the past was rich in agriculture, especially orchards and poultry farming. My mother’s Aunty lived on Wonga Road in what is now called the Golden Mile with its elevated views to the Dandenong Ranges. Aunty Rita had the most beautiful garden and a wonderful 1950’s home.
My second cousin still lives in this house and it is always a pleasure to go there and admire the simple design touches in the form of etched glass panels for privacy, special cabinetry in the kitchen, the light fittings and door handles that all give the house that distinctive sense of the 1950’s. But most of all it’s the windows allowing the morning light and views to the garden that make it so special.
Maroondah Council is geographically defined by the Dandenong Creek to the south, and Warrandyte South to the north. The main roads running through the council in an east-west direction are the Maroondah Highway, Mt Dandenong Road and Canterbury Road. Heading north-south are Bayswater Road and Dorset Road, and Eastlink rubs along the western boundary.
It has a largely residential base with plenty of large retail premises running along the main roads. Interestingly, compared to other outer suburban councils, suburbs like Ringwood and Croydon have an abundance of strip shops that hark back to the 1950’s and give residents that great sense of community.
Fun Fact: Car City, famous for its raucous but memorable adverts occupies 12 acres along the Maroondah Highway. It has 23 car dealers.

Our building supervisor Braidon Marshall was absolutely fantastic. He was friendly, approachable and accessible when we had a few issues out of hours. We sprung a leak on one rather rainy night, and he came to the rescue after his birthday dinner no less!
