Locked in the centre of Melbourne suburbia, Monash Council, named after General Sir John Monash houses some of Melbourne’s greatest public institutions, including Monash Hospital and Monash University. And don’t forget the Monash (or South-Eastern) Freeway.
What’s all the fuss about in regards to this Monash fellow? Well for starters he was one of the most successful and amazing WW1 Generals. He was also the engineer of the State Electricity Commission, rolled out across regional Victoria post WW2.
If you haven’t read already read it, you should grab a copy of Tim Fisher’s biography on Monash titled “Maestro John Monash”. So named because of his meticulously planned and executed battles that for the first time in that theatre of war put the safety of the men under his command as the number one priority. His battles were successful and heralded a turning point of the war in France in favour of the British.
Monash Council has its western most boundary along Warrigal Road, where it runs between Highbury Road to the north, and Centre Road to the south. Its Eastern boundary runs along the Dandenong Creek.
It contains many suburbs including Ashwood, Burwood, Chadstone, Clayton, Glen Waverley, Hughesdale, Huntingdale, Mount Waverley, Mulgrave, Notting Hill, Oakleigh, Oakleigh East, Oakleigh South and Wheelers Hill.
The suburbs of Glen Waverley, Mount Waverley and Wheelers Hill were part of the massive expansion towards the east and was largely developed on the sites of old orchards and market gardens in the 1960’s and 1970’s. A lot of the housing stock is derived of that period although much of it has been lost to knock down rebuilds and the ubiquitous French Chateau is favoured.
Other suburbs within the council are also a product of the post WW2 building boom along with a mix of large office and wharehouse complexes especially along the main roads.
Supa Group have built hundreds of extensions in the Monash Council.
Fun Fact: General Sir John Monash is buried in Brighton Cemetery which is located at Caulfield.

The Monash City Council's building permit process is designed to ensure that all new buildings in the city meet safety and construction standards. Applicants must submit detailed plans and specifications for their proposed building, and the council will review these plans to make sure that they comply with all applicable codes and regulations.
Building permits are typically granted only after the council has confirmed that the proposed building meets all safety requirements. In some cases, the council may require applicants to hire a professional engineer or architect to review their plans and provide a letter of compliance.
The Monash City Council's website has more information about its building permit process, including application forms and fee schedules.
Generally, if you are looking for extensions or alterations to a single residential dwelling within the Monash City Council, you’ll only need to apply for a building permit. However, you will require a planning permit if your property has a site area of less than 400 square metres or your property falls within a Heritage Overlay area.
You can find more information on the Monash City Council relevant webpage. Alternatively, we can access this information on your behalf and advise you on the best course of action considering your location, the scale and the type of development you’re proposing.
Private building surveyors help you correct permits by providing you with a report outlining your property's condition. This report can then be used to show city officials that your property is in good condition and doesn't require any major repairs. It's important to have a pre-purchase survey on any property you're thinking of buying, as this will give you a better idea of what repair work might need to be carried out in the future.
