Moonee Valley Council Insights

"The municipality of Moonee Valley is a wonky shaped council directly to the north west of the Melbourne CBD.

It gets its name for the Moonee Ponds Creek which hugs the council’s eastern border. That creek is now essentially the Tullamarine Freeway, one of Melbourne’s first freeways built on the late 1960’s and opened in 1970 by Premier Bolte.

The suburbs of Ascot Vale and Moonee Ponds are towards the southern end of the council, both these suburbs being established very early in Melbourne’s development. These suburbs are densely populated and contain many examples of grand Victorian homes and there are many magnificent tree lined streetscapes containing interesting family homes.

But before you even get to these suburbs on the eastern side of Mount Alexander Road is the tiny suburb of Travencore. Named after one of the early mansions in the area, the owner of that property, Henry Madden used to export horses to India and named his property after the kingdom of Travencore in Southern India. A row of Victorian Terrance homes hug Mount Alexander Road and are distinctive for their collective presence."

"Fun Fact: Mount Alexander Road used to be known as Mount Macedon Road. If you follow the map it leads directly to the Victorian Goldfields. If you look at a map the start of Mount Alexander Road is not far from the Melbourne CBD and leads out through Essendon, Bulla, Diggers Rest to Kyneton and beyond. There are a number of very old corner buildings along this road and it is not hard to imagine the stream of traffic of all sorts heading north to Bendigo with immigrants trying their luck.

Progessing north along Mount Alexander Road are the suburbs of Essendon and Strathmore. Essendon contains a wonderful array of interestingly styled and solidly built homes and is has a leafy feel due to the lovely gardens in the area. Strathmore consists of many post war family homes typically brick and hugs Essendon Airport and Tullarmarine Freeway,

To the west are the suburbs of Aberfeldie,  Avondale Heights and Keilor East. These largely hug the Maribyrnong River which flows into the Yarra at Footscray.

A trip on the SS Blackbird upstream along the Maribyrnong is a thing of delight and highly recommended to anyone who wants to see a different aspect to Melbourne."

Frequently asked questions

What is the Moonee Valley building permit fees?

Building permit fees depend on the scale and type of building construction you’re undertaking. You can speak with the city council for more details about their building permit fee structure. Our team can also manage this process and include these costs in our fixed price quotation.

How does Supa Group help me get the correct building permits?

Before our Moonee Ponds master builders begin your house extension or renovation project, we’ll work with the building surveyor and the council on your behalf to ensure we have all the permits and approvals required prior to the commencement of your project.

Supa Group has been in the business of creating beautiful Melbourne homes for over 45 years. We’ve developed streamlined processes and excellent relationships with local contractors and councils. Our highly experienced team are familiar with the codes and procedures of the Moonee Valley City Council. We will obtain your building permit, so you can start enjoying your new home and lifestyle as soon as possible.

What is Moonee Valley City Council’s planning permit process?

The planning permit process requires significant preparation and documentation. Consequently, most people engage a fully registered builder, like us, to act on their behalf. As an overview, the process involves:

  1. A pre-application meeting with the Moonee Valley City Council
  2. Submission of a planning permit application for your home renovation
  3. Application review
  4. Public notification, if necessary
  5. Assessment and report from the council
  6. Decision made about your application
  7. Review by VCAT, if required
  8. Extend permit, if issued

Issues can arise with your permit application when your property is heritage-listed, or there is some other trigger, such as a previous development on your land or lot size. However, we are experienced with such restrictions and procedures. Our expert team can progress your application successfully and produce excellent results in adherence to council restrictions.

Do I need a planning permit for my Moonee Valley home extensions?

If you are embarking on major building works, such as renovations or extensions, you may need a planning permit from the Moonee Valley City Council. The Moonee Valley Planning Scheme outlines any rules that apply to your land use. We can determine these details and advise you on the best course of action when applying for a building permit. The permit process is an involved one, and our friendly professionals are here for you and make this process as stress-free and seamless as possible.
