Darebin Council Insights

"Darebin Council sits to the north of Melbourne’s CBD and encompasses the suburbs of Northcote, Fairfield, Alphington, Thornbury, Preston, Reservoir and Kingsbury.

The actual council area is bounded to the east by the Darebin Creek and the west by the Merri Creek, so it is the tale of two creeks. To the South it borders Heidelberg Road, near the Yarra River and the North is the Western Ring Road. As a result of its geography it has heavy clay soil with plenty of rocks floating near the surface. This always makes for interesting times during the digging of Foundations.

A lot of 'early' Melbourne can be found around the suburb of Northcote, where there are several bluestone churches and other buildings constructed from rock quarried in the area, There are several old bluestone shops along the south side of Heidelberg Road which was the main route from Melbourne to Heidelberg in the 1850’s."

"Styles of houses around Northcote, Fairfield and Alphington include late Victorian, Edwardian and Californian Bungalows in abundance. To the north of Darebin Road you start to encounter houses of Art Deco and Austerity styles. Many of the houses around Thornbury, Preston and Reservoir were built post WW2 on decent sized blocks and contain many examples of wonderful cream and clinker brick homes with matching fences.

Reservoir is a large suburb of two parts, the older area to the south was originally part of Preston but was renamed Reservoir due to the existence of the large water tanks along Plenty Road supplied by the Yan Yean Reservoir. The northern part of Reservoir and Kingsbury have houses that were mainly constructed from the 1950’s to the 1970’s. There is an interesting subdivision to the area around Hughes Parade in Reservoir that was planned by Saxil Tuxen, a well know Town Planner.

Over the years Supa Group have built several hundred extensions in this council area, the types of homes contained therein are readily extendable and are worth preserving due to the character they hold."

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit for my Darebin home extension?

Yes. Darebin Council has clear rules defining what projects need permits.

Common Darebin home extension and renovation projects that require permits include:

  • New houses
  • Extensions
  • Demolitions
  • Pergolas, verandahs or carports
  • Decks or balconies
  • Garages

Your Supa Group contracts administrator will always ensure that your project has the right council permissions so that you can enjoy your home in peace.

Will Supa Group hire the contractors I want to use?

Of course. We’re happy to collaborate with specialists of your choosing.

We do require them to meet our safety standards and provide the necessary insurance and OH&S credentials.

We will also require them to guarantee that they can meet the deadlines that we have agreed upon with you.

Can I live in my Darebin home during the extensions?

In most cases, you can remain in your home while we work.

You will have to find temporary accommodation if we cannot give you safe access to your kitchen, bedroom or toilet.

We’ll make every effort to reduce the inconvenience and will plan carefully to get you back home as soon as possible.

Can I add extensions to a heritage-listed Darebin home?

You certainly can. It does require a comprehensive planning and permissions process, but we can add extensions to heritage-listed Darebin homes. We will work with the Darebin Council to complete this process correctly.

We’ve found the key to doing work on heritage homes is preserving the original structures' integrity. Extensions should be seamless, tasteful and compliment the aesthetics of the existing home.
