Building permits for your Banyule home extensions

We understand what's permissible when we design your home extension. So when we design your ideal family home we keep this in mind. Sometimes it is necessary to go to Banyule Council to arrange a dispensation or to get planning approval. We handle all of the paperwork and liaise with the building surveyor or the city council for you.

Instead of being bogged down by council permit applications and paperwork, you can focus on enjoying designing your home improvement:

Banyule Council Insights

"To the North East of Melbourne’s CBD is leafy Banyule Council. It hugs the Yarra River which forms much of its Southern and Eastern Boundaries and incorporates wonderful open floodplains with golf courses and sports fields. This area is the home to the suburbs of Ivanhoe, Ivanhoe East, Eaglemont, Heidelberg, Viewbank and Lower Plenty.

The Western boundary is boarded by the Darebin Creek up to La Trobe University and beyond that Plenty Road. The Northern Border is contained by the Western Ring Road that currently (not for long!) at Greensborough and extends easterly to Briar Hill, Eltham North and St Helena.

Fun fact: Land at Ivanhoe was subdivided in 1838. Archibald Thom advertised and called the land Ivanhoe after the novel written by Sir Walter Scott. Many street names within the suburb are named after places and names in the book including Athelstane Grove, Robin Hood Road, Scotts Parade and Sherwood Road (amongst others)."

"Other suburbs in the municipality includes Heidelberg Heights, Heidelberg West, Rosanna, Macleaod, Yallambie, Bundoora and Montmorency.

The housing stock is varied and resembles a typical pattern of the growth rings as Melbourne expanded. The closer suburbs to the Melbourne CBD have a great mix of Victorian and Edwardian Housing. There are many wonderful examples of Arts and Crafts style houses built in the early 1900’s mainly closer to the river.

Heidelberg, along with Brighton were the first settlements out of the fledgling town of Melbourne. Brighton for those who wanted a sea side location, and Heidelberg for its rural charms.

Rosanna, largely developed in the 1950’s and 1960’s has wonderful examples of post war cream brick family homes.

Fun fact: There is a Waverley Avenue in Ivanhoe and an Ivanhoe Street in Glen Waverley."

Frequently asked questions

How much are the council permit fees?

The Banyule City Council fee will depend on the complexity and scale of your home improvements. The Banyule BPI Building Permit fee schedule provides a comprehensive outline of your home renovation project's possible scope of fees. These fees are included in our fixed price quotation.

How does Supa Group ensure I get the correct council permits?

Supa Group has been in the construction business for over 45 years, creating Melbourne's stunning new homes. Over this time, we’ve not only built an expert team of renovating specialists, but we’ve also developed proficient communication processes and built productive relationships with contractors and local councils. We are knowledgeable about Banyule City Council’s codes, regulations and permit procedures.

Before our Banyule extension builders begin your home renovations, we’ll collaborate with the council on your behalf to ensure all of the correct permits and approvals get finalised so your project is on time. Whether you want to extend your ground floor or take on complete kitchen renovations, we’ll do it all so that you can enjoy your new home as soon as possible.

Will I need a planning permit for my Banyule home renovations?

Whether you need a planning permit in Banyule depends on how you would like to extend your property, the scale of your project and your renovation plans. You can find the specific rules for your land in the Banyule Planning Scheme

We can find this information on your behalf and advise you on the best way forward when applying for any council permits. You are welcome to contact our reliable, friendly team at any time, to get clarification on the whole permit process.

What is the Banyule City Council’s planning permit application process?

As renovating homeowners, you may need a permit from your local council before any construction work can commence. This applies to any house extensions, renovations, decks and verandas.

When applying for a building permit with the building surveyor, you are required to compile a list of documentation, including:

  • Property title
  • Copy of the plans drawn to scale detailing the elevation and site plans, floor plan and section details
  • Completed building permit application
  • Fee payment

However, our team of renovation experts, including the registered builders and surveyors, will take care of everything for you, so you don’t need to worry.
