Raising your lifestyle to a higher standard

It’s time to take your home up a level. Second storey extensions can add immeasurable worth to your home and lifestyle. From comfortable bedrooms for every child, to a luxurious parents retreat, to a vast open-plan living and entertaining area, the options are limitless.

Why consider building a second storey?

A second storey extension not only adds space for the family to grow. It can also add to the value of your home, and the quality of life of everyone in it. Families need space to grow, while spending valuable time together. A second storey extension from Supa Group guarantees you just this, and allows you to enjoy your home comfortably for years to come.

Adding a second storey

Second storey additions don’t have to be difficult. With all renovations, there’s always a bit of change and compromise, but as long as you have access to cooking, toileting and bathing facilities, you can still live at home while building a second storey. You can learn more about our process below, but a basic second storey extension follows these steps:

  1. Design consultation and approval: This is where we work closely with you to get your second storey addition floor plan just right, and finalise the elements of design that you want to see in your home.
  2. Working drawings and permits: Our expert team will create working drawings and liaise with your local council to obtain second storey extension permits. We’ll also outline the costs of your second storey addition.
  3. Construction, inspection, and completion: You’ll have full visibility while we are building your second storey extension. We’ll ensure that everything is up to code and looking great before we finish up.

The final step is you sitting back and admiring the brand new addition to your home. With Supa Group, adding a second storey to a house is a breeze. You are in full control from design inception, to the final completion of the project.

Case Studies

Preston West

The clients were not looking for a loud and contrasting extension.

They loved their character filled weatherboard house but desperately needed more space for their two  children.

The new extension not only had to blend sympathetically with the period features but also provide a more modern approach internally to design and layout.

An upper floor extension was an easy decision. It allowed a functional and spacious ‘zoned’ area to be created, with only a corner fireplace making way for the new staircase, minimising the impact to the ground floorplan.

Going up; the new second storey extension greeted you with an open common ‘hangout’ area.  Designed to optimise the use of space; the extension also featured two generous bedrooms serviced by a main bathroom with even a separate all purpose room that doubled as a study or spare bedroom.

On completion, the new house was now a beautiful and more spacious home  that was not only seamless but had great street appeal.

Box Hill

The clients’ design brief was for an extension which would provide a large entertaining space; an increased number of bedrooms; and additional living spaces within the home for family living. The extension resulted in a four bedroom home plus a study with two bathrooms; a multi-purpose room; and an external entertaining deck. The size and functionality of the home was also enhanced by works to the existing family room and kitchen. The design also provided for plenty of storage space and, very importantly for these clients, complied with positive feng-shui principles.

Balwyn North

With two young teenagers, this Art Deco Maisonette was seriously needing more space. The obvious solution was an upper floor extension allowing the clients to retain their beautiful landscaped garden whilst providing much needed space for their growing family.

Inspiration for this upper floor extension came from a ski trip to New Zealand where the clients stayed in a lodge that boasted an ultra-modern façade.

What resulted was a visually striking fusion of modern and classical. The new second storey with its Western red Cedar cladding, Colourbond roof and unique extruded casement window all stained in dark charcoal nestled proudly on the maisonette. Existing and new were undeniably distinct from each other yet connected by simple features like the charcoal stained fascia and the unique built up chimney in detailed metal cladding.

To make the upper floor extension more cost effective, Hardies Scyon Axon cladding was used to the sides and rear of the second storey extension.

The upper floor with its slick, dark hued floorboards featured two spacious bedrooms for the children with a main bathroom, powder room, open rumpus and a store room. The maisonette was beautifully and respectfully renovated throughout with only an existing study making way for the staircase minimising the impact on original floor plan.

The clients had a clear and defined idea of the extension design that would suit their lifestyle needs. Following a consultation with one of our Senior Design Consultants, a contemporary approach was taken to the extension of this traditional house. The design brief involved transforming the facade and then adding a contemporary ground and first floor extension featuring a void between the two levels.  A dynamic relationship ensued between the old and new resulting in a construction that was not only functional but visually impressive.

Retaining the original warmth and character of this traditional home was one of the vital criteria which informed the planning and concept stage. Respectful transformation of the post war façade into a beautiful Californian bungalow inspired design resulted. With its new front porch and covered area, clients could sit back and watch the world pass by.

Glen Iris #2

This client has returned to Supa Group on four separate occasions over several years to carry out separate stages of their home extension. Their beautiful period home has been sympathetically extended to include a range of fabulous living options such as a large home theatre, five bedrooms, a multipurpose area and al fresco entertaining spaces. In working closely together with our clients over several occasions, Supa Group has a great rapport with the Owners and an in-depth understanding of their requirements.

Clifton Hill

A clever ground floor extension was added to a two bedroom single fronted Victorian house.

Located on a narrow and long block, clients wanted to add an en suite to the master bedroom, create a third bedroom with a new combined bathroom and European laundry.

Transformation was completed with the addition of a light filled open plan kitchen dining and living area to the back opening up to an intimate alfresco and landscaped garden.

Picture Perfect

Framed by a glorious maple tree this 1910 built period house with its high-pitched slate roof and leadlight windows was a delight to extend. We were presented with a home the clients loved but had outgrown. The brief required a design that gave the family much needed space for their growing family but at the same time was sympathetic to its old-world charm.

No build is without its obstacles and it took a skillful design to work within the restrictions of a narrow block.

Works began with a partial demolition to the rear. Out with the old and in with the new. The new floor plan design involved converting the old kitchen into a new walk in pantry and a powder room. A ground floor extension was then added featuring a new spacious light filled open plan kitchen; dining and living area and white Victorian ash French doors with highlight windows was created; opening up to the Merbau decked undercover alfresco.

The existing first floor was extended further to create two spacious bedrooms for the family’s young children and parents were not overlooked with a new luxurious en suite for the master bedroom. The clever design also allowed for plenty of extra storage space to mum’s delight.

Attention to detail resonates throughout. The stunning white kitchen with its flecked marble bench top and herringbone tiled splashback contrasts beautifully against the organic Baltic pine floorboards that were matched to existing. Victorian ash timber casement windows and custom made doors, was the perfect finish in restoring this home to its former glory.

Externally, the second storey extension featured gable end and rough cast render to match existing façade giving this home great street appeal and making it ‘Picture Perfect’.

A Gem in Newport.

With incredible street appeal this charming 1940’s weatherboard house in a hue of powder blue, has been beautifully extended and renovated; a home that puts a smile on your face every time you walk in the front door.

When it came to the brief, this family had done their research and were well prepared. They had a clear and defined idea of what they wanted to achieve whilst working within their budget.

With limited space; preserving the north facing private back yard for the children was a must, so the ideal solution was to extend up.

The successful design had to be intelligent and thoughtful, maximising the use of space and light. What resulted was a fresh contemporary floorplan displaying relaxed flowing spaces for where the family gathered and importantly exhibited seamless connectivity to the new first floor. A design that ticked all the right boxes; fulfilling the family’s individual needs and expectations for the now, and long term.

Adding the new addition allowed for the ground floorplan to be ‘tweaked’ and parents were rewarded with a new spacious ensuite and extra wardrobe.

From the warm organic timber vanity, crisp white benchtop with protruding bowl to the matt black tapware and fittings and heated towel rail, this bathroom is a study in elegance.

Further alterations to the ground floor included the removal of an existing European laundry and renovating the existing bathroom; replicating the elegance displayed in the ensuite.

The new laundry is a delight; a smart modern clean up command centre streamlined to handle the heaviest of loads. With plenty of storage to boot and easy access to the outdoor via a fully glazed door with hi-lite windows, this area is light filled and functional.

Finally, the ground floor was extended at the rear over the existing alfresco deck to create a Walk in Pantry for the kitchen. Every square inch of the design had maximised the use of space beautifully with emphasise on optimal functionality.

Flaunting her new first floor addition; this gem shone brightly. All the bases were covered with two generous bedrooms for the children; each with BIR; and a modern bathroom with separate powder room at their disposal.

And that’s not all. A third room which doubled up as a study and guest room was created, a contemporary ergonomic room with built in timber desk, space saving features and ample cabinetry.

For relaxation and play, the children had their own ‘Hang out’ living area and the first-floor roof space was also adapted to include a large nominal attic space for additional storage.

Meticulous care was given to make sure the extension was sympathetic to the original charm and character of the home. From the corrugated Zincalume roof to the white timber awning windows to match existing; you’d never know this home had been extended.

South Kingsville

Extending their 1990’s brick home was always this young family’s first preference. They loved their home and suburb but were feeling the squeeze as their family grew.

An extensive sympathetic second story extension was designed and created as the small subdivided block and boundary setbacks did not offer a viable ground floor option.

The design had to be sympathetic to the original 1990’s unit but with a slight modern twist which presented itself in the introduction of Scyon Axon cladding to the first floor.

Boasting a new master bedroom with ensuite and WIR for the parents plus two additional bedrooms and main bathroom for their young children, the design ticked all the right boxes. No space was wasted; an existing bedroom made way for the staircase and a new spacious study/home office.

The second story allowed for the ground floorplan to be modified providing a fluid open floor plan with more living space that met the family’s needs perfectly.

The single story two-bedroom house was converted to a four bedroom/ three-bathroom family home. The duration of the project from initial enquiry to final inspection (including Town planning) was 12 months.

Ascot Vale

With an abundance of character filled features, this beautiful double fronted free-standing Victorian was extended without sacrificing its history.

From the wide curved iron porch roof with its romantic iron lacework to the vivid geometric encaustic tiles, this charming Ascot Vale home had a welcoming street appeal.

Whilst the clients loved their period home, the current floorplan did not afford them the modern-day comfort they craved. Preserving and keeping the integrity of the homes character and original architectural details was paramount. The home had previously been extended back in the 90’s but the floorplan did not meet the current needs of this professional family.

Starting with a clean slate, the old extension and decking area was demolished, keeping the original four rooms of the home untouched. To achieve the space the clients wanted without encroaching on their garden; a ground extension with an extension above was designed.

The expansive ground floor extension comprised of a new open plan kitchen, dining and living area; main bathroom and an inconspicuous European laundry hidden behind closed doors beneath the stairwell. The smart new floorplan and layout allowed for natural flow between existing and new spaces without having to modify or compromise any part of the original home.

With several large vertical timber windows adorning the north facing wall, the open area was airy and light filled. The stylish kitchen area was perfectly sized, a contemporary design with a touch of French provincial boasting a commercial grade stove, plenty of storage and even a full sized dual zoned wine fridge for the wine lovers.

For more informal entertaining, clients could open up the French doors leading onto a decked area which overlooked the landscaped garden and fishpond.

The second story extension sat nestled above the new ground floor area and consisted of a spacious master bedroom with walk in robe and ensuite and a generous break out living area and home office.

It was on her daily walk to the Ivanhoe train station that the client came upon a Supa Group project where a second story extension was being built.

With interest piqued observing how steadily works progressed, the client, impressed with the end result reached out to find out how we might be able to help her.

Moving was not an option. Clients loved their Art Deco family home and community but just needed more space for their growing family.

Already fully renovated with an inground pool in the backyard, going up was the only solution. The first-floor addition would allow the family to maximise the homes floor plan and provide design flexibility.

In keeping with the homes period character, a beautiful and sympathetic second story extension was designed. Offering each of the young children their own spacious bedroom with BIR, a main bathroom with separate toilet, linen cupboard and a breakout ‘kids only’ play area, the children were thrilled and mum was delighted with the extra storage.

Besides the new first floor, the brief also called for some modification to the ground floor to add a Butler’s pantry and make room for the staircase.  The design had to make sense and importantly be aesthetically pleasing.

When designing a second story extension the location of the staircase is important.  It not only determines the design and layout of the upstairs floorplan but its accessibility needs to meet the family’s activities and lifestyle.

The solution; a smart design that achieved two different goals with only one room being compromised. The new timber staircase and spacious butler’s pantry which backed onto the kitchen was created with minimal disruption to the ground floorplan preserving the living room with its geometric Art Deco windows.

Freshly painted in a soft pastel hue and sporting a new Colorbond steel roof, this beautiful house is now the perfect home for this family.
